Digital renderings of the Old Summer Palace

When one of my Chinese co-workers sent me this link of digital renderings of the Old Summer Palace, he attached a little note saying, “By the way, it was all destroyed.” For the nationalistic new bourgeoisie of China, the destruction of the old Summer Palace in 1860 (during the 2nd Opium War) by British troops (who wanted to “teach China a lesson” in retaliation for the torture and murder of approx 20 European P.O.W.s) is a very sore point. To many Chinese the Old Summer Palace symbolizes the unparalleled glory of China’s past civilization and the great wrongs China suffered at the hands of imperialistic Western powers.
