Just got back from our first Mandarin classes. It was great! Our teachers really seemed to know what they were doing, and we have enough Chinglish to make our classrooms almost completely English-free. I drank a big cup of coffee half an hour before class so I was all keyed up. We asked around afterward and it turns out we ended up with two of the favourite teachers. This program will be really challenging, lots of homework and we’ll have to study a lot just to stay on top of things, but that’s what we’re here for.
Today is cold and drizzly, like winter in Vancouver, only all the puddles here are brown and the sidewalks are coated in a thin layer of mud. They’re forecasting snow for Sunday!
Last night we met with some some new foreign friends for a weekly get-together. They were a lot of fun, and it’s great to have a mix in the room: an Aussie, two Brits, an American TCK (third culture kid) who grew up in Zaire and Kenya, and another American. Tonight we’ll be putting in our first hours of studying. Tomorrow we register with the PSB (Public Security Bureau… I think).
ps – Our site is so slow right now because of something with the servers. They say it should be fixed by next week or so.
