This day hike included thousands of steps (going up), big spiders, butterflies, and an impromptu tea party on the side of mountain with a group of very friendly strangers.

  1. The kids and I loved the pictures.. I love the dragon.. thats amazing.. is it made of wood?
ok.. a few more questions for you guys..
do you know what kind of butterfly that is?
how big is that spider in real life? it looks 5 inches long to us..

    the flowers are beautiful!
    thanks for sharing!

  2. Hey Ruth! Say hi to Joel for me! I haven’t said “Hi Joel” for a while.

We have no idea what kinds of butterflies are here. But there’re lots on the mountain paths. That one wasn’t massive. There are some big dark ones with bright blue spots, but they don’t ever land… they hover over the flowers and won’t sit still for pictures. See here and here.

The spiders are huge, and creepy. That one was about the size of Jessica’s hand and fingers. This spider (see here and here) is the same kind but bigger (make sure you zoom in… you can see the spinnerets). They also have tiny ant-sized bright red spiders that crawl on their webs, but I couldn’t manage to focus on them.

These four photos are from the Elephant Mountain Hike.
