Our apartment in Yonghe

Here’s pictures of the apartment (as requested), suavely modeled by Joel (which wasn’t requested – that’s just a bonus). We didn’t forget the cowboys. This should convince everyone that we aren’t ‘suffering’; the cat’s out of the bag. Now how are we supposed to raise funds for Tianjin?

  1. Shauna…
Of course it’s the cheapest one.(= If it weren’t, we wouldn’t have bought it…and you wouldn’t be either!!!!(=

    Kelly…
Yeah…the shower is definitely not built to Western specs. Well, the shower part itself is…but there’s nothing enclosing the shower from the rest of the bathroom. We put up the curtain to give it the illusion of separateness. There are two drains…one in the middle of hte bathroom floor and one in the “shower area”. But really, the whole bathroom floor is where all the water goes.

We’ve adapted though. We simply finish our showers and then grab the squeegee to get rid of all of the excess water on the floor.(=

  2. Yeah… down to the roots, we are Sargents. And the dictionary definition for “ ” certainly includes the word “frugal” in it somewhere. We LOVE IKEA. =) We have to drive 45 minutes to get there, but it doesn’t matter… we still love it.

  3. ok I LOVE the shot of Joel brushing his teeth! made me laugh.. I think the cowboy theme furniture is just perfect! Hey and they all match! wow!.. The kitchen is so cool.. I love the drying rack(?) above the sink.. what a great idea.. what a great experience for you two.. wow! amazing!

  4. Great guys! Looks pretty much American, except for the gimongous buildings all around ouside. Well… and the tiny kitchen, and the bathroom sink with no counter, and the shower basin with no separation from the rest of the bathroom floor. Hum, actually it looks a lot like Brazil :P

  5. Yeah, we’re definitely not suffering. We actually didn’t have much choice about where ended up living… I mean, we could have said no, but they’d been looking for months before we got there with no luck (population density means apartments go fast). The temporary place we were staying in was WAY too nice and too expensive and too far away from work. This one is a 2 minute walk to the school or the subway, has the huge park across the street, and the price fits within our housing allowance (so no rent for us!). But it is in the upper-middle class range, and if we were staying long-term I don’t think we’d settle for a place this nice.

  6. Haha Shauna! You have been auto-edited by the ‘Polite-ifier’, which automatically removes words we don’t want on this site, like our current or former last names!

Yeah down to the roots, we are [edit]. And the dictionary definition for [edit] certainly includes the word frugal in it somewhere.

I don’t mean to make it look like you were cussing a blue streak, or anything, so I thought I’d mention why your comment got munched. I just added Jessica’s maiden name to the ‘bad word list,’ which is why your comment wasn’t edited when you first posted it.

  7. Joel-
Thanks for clearing up the edit marks. I was really tying to figure out what had gotten edited and was thinking, “Surely she didn’t cuss.” Now I understand.

    Joel and Jessica-
Yea for Ikea stuff! I LOVE that store!!! I hope the Ikea bed has treated you well.

Your apartment is cool. I’m glad you posted pictures because I couldn’t really picture where you guys might be living. This helps. As for the Cowboy couches–YEEHAW! It should remind you of all of us here in Texas. Really, they aren’t bad. They look like they are in good shape and somewhere that would be comfortable for a nap. Maybe if I come to visit, I could sleep on one! Don’t worry, the chances of me coming are not likely, so there’s no need to panic!

I was cracking up looking at the pictures because like half of them showed Joel reading on the couch. It looked like you were trying to find Joel’s best angle or something. Also, Joel’s short hair and the lack of facial hair still throw me off.

    Hey Joel-
I saw your sister at her place of work (am I allowed to say the name of the store?). I finally introduced myself and at first she seemed a little weirded-out that I knew her name and who she was. I kind of didn’t realize that although I know who she is, she has no idea who I am. She was sweet though and did her job expertly.

Well, I had better get to writing lesson plans for my second to last week of Student Teaching. I think I am starting to become addicted to this whole blog thing–well, at least yours. I love you both and think of you often!

    ~Abi
