Last night was a fun first with the students: they took us to the local night market and each picked something cultural to introduce in English to the foreigners (us). They each bought something, and then we sat down and talked about it in English while eating it (they all picked food items, so we walked away stuffed). Oyster omelettes, bubble milk tea, rice dumplings, the Taiwan equivalent of chicken-fried chicken, and a ‘vegetarian gelatin’ drink that tastes better than the translation makes it sound. “Culture sharing” is one of six learning categories that they experience every class (along with science, math, arts, socials, extra English), so they get Culture Sharing once every two weeks. The idea is to help them take their culture with them into the English-speaking world – something usually overlooked in English education here.

If you haven’t, you HAVE TO ASK what is with the bunny ears hand sign!?!?!?!
Oh, your students are so cute! Seeing you two with them makes me want to see some little Joels and Jessicas running around. You guys will be great parents when the time comes.
Ryan – I know, it’s been making me wonder for a while. Pretty much every female under 40 does it, plus some of the guys. You see it in the papers and in everyone’s photo albums, nevermind half the photos we take. I’ll ask Mingdaw tomorrow.
I suspect it has something to do with the “cult of cuteness” they’ve got going on over here.
Abi…
They are cute, aren’t they? But don’t hold your breath waiting for the little Joel and Jessicas…it might still be a few years!(= Thanks for the vote of confidence, though. :)
How are the wedding plans???
