That was my guess originally, too, but for some I reason I was thinking he was... no longer with us. yeah, I don't blame her for being a little grumpy. Not the most highly respected of Chinese leaders. His wife seemed very elderly - that might have contributed to her looking grumpy about having to sit through the whole show.
