Last night was a fun first with the students: they took us to the local night market and each picked something cultural to introduce in English to the foreigners (us). They each bought something, and then we sat down and talked about it in English while eating it (they all picked food items, so we walked away stuffed). Oyster omelettes, bubble milk tea, rice dumplings, the Taiwan equivalent of chicken-fried chicken, and a ‘vegetarian gelatin’ drink that tastes better than the translation makes it sound. “Culture sharing” is one of six learning categories that they experience every class (along with science, math, arts, socials, extra English), so they get Culture Sharing once every two weeks. The idea is to help them take their culture with them into the English-speaking world – something usually overlooked in English education here.
